Welcome to the desert! Please, no smoking.

Hello, and good evening, fellow "social deviants." Good day to you all, and what a grand week this has been for us!

First of all, our wonderful Senators and Representatives in Congress have finally repealed Don't Ask, Don't Tell - now anyone who wishes to serve in the military can do so, whether openly gay or straight. Most critical in the end of the campaign was John McCain, who finally stepped onto the equality train with the help of his beautiful wife and daughter, already on board. The day of freedom has come!

Sadly, friends, the paragraph above is, as of now, a fantasy of the future - John McCain, still clinging to his 1950's dreamworld, is still a stalwart opponent of the gay right to step into a tacky camouflage uniform and rally national support in a foreign land. This dinosaur is threatening to filibuster the DADT battle into oblivion, actually. As of now, there aren't votes to stop him, but as our fantastic dream exists, so does the possibility of its realization - one day soon, our inevitable day will come.

In national news, we've got a brand-new adorable candidate on the scene: Christine O'Donnell, whom you may remember from her 1990's ad campaign instructing young people on proper God-given sexuality (not to mention, saying "masturbation is the answer to AIDS and all these other problems that come with sex outside of marriage"). Get real, Delaware: apparently this woman actually could win a Senate seat there. Read up more on this lady, and call your friends in Delaware. Seriously, this is ridiculous.

To be fair, my lovelies, things aren't all bad, as PRIDE was reminded this past Saturday of what it means to have strength in numbers. NC Pride, this past Saturday, was a smash hit, from what I could tell - I bought buttons, saw oodles of drag queens, and made my rounds about the shops and stores, in the hustle and bustle of a gay culture bubble. These gatherings strengthen my hope and faith in our community, and in the power of local artists - these cute little buttons you might see on my hat were handmade - love it!

As for the group announcements, everyone should check out Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - Hugo Weaving is all over this movie, and I know you all would love to see Agent Smith in drag. We've got a game night coming up, and some more fun events planned for October, which you'll have to stay tuned to hear about, of course.
Keep your feather boas on, PRIDE: I'm your new web-deity, and it's going to be a bumpy ride!
