UNCW PRIDE works month after month--and in Caitlin's case every single day--to put on quality programs that both give a safe space to LGBTQ students and educate the campus at large. We find speakers, get petitions signed, sit on B-GLAD panels, write letters, engage our peers in conversation, and make sure that we are heard every chance we get on campus.
And while an activist's job is never done, we like to have a little fun every now and then to. As an organization, we like to blow off a little steam toward the end of the year, and what better way than with drag performers! This year we've have unprecedented success when it comes to getting people to our programs, but our annual drag show continues to be our most successful. My sophomore year we packed 250+ people into the Warwick Center Ballroom after a year of being disappointed by lack of interest and criticism of the other events that we planned and supported. Divas was the beginning of a new era for our humble little student org.
While, we've had our ups and downs as far as attendance, Divas Live was a huge success again due both the program's excellent reputation and the high quality performers that we contracted. I'm looking forward to April 2011--my last Divas Live--and the end of my studies at UNCW.
