So, I let being sick get the best of me, and I have a lot of writing to do to catch up so, here we go.
23. That the Supreme Court Ruled You Have to Own Your Opinions in Public
This week, the Supreme Court ruled (8-1) that making the petitioners in favor of repealing the D.C. law that allows the district to perform same-sex marriage legally via ballot initiative does not violate the first amendment. This effectively, makes the names on the petition public record. I guess that means if you want to be a bigot, you'll have to do so in plain view. Perhaps, if that's the case it will deter more of the lukewarm signers more reluctant to sigh away the rights of their friends and neighbors. I'm calling it a victory.
24. That Maine IS Investigating
Many of us remember the controversy of funding that unfolded after Prop 8 passed via ballot initiative--the Mormon Church could have quite possibly broken some rules with funding. Well, Maine, a recent victim of Act 1, is going to investigate the contribution of NOM (National Organization for Marriage) despite their protests. This announcement came after the Supreme Court Ruling mentioned above.
25. That Freedom to Marry Is Going On Tour...Also
Keeping with the marriage theme, Freedom to Marry (think: White Knots) has announced that it is going on tour this summer. This announcement came after NOM (think: Carrie Prejean) announced its summer tour. In honor of wedding season, the National Organization for Marriage decided to launch a summer tour to "preserve" marriage, and so, Freedom to Marry decided that they'd do their own marriage tour to try and break down the conservative ideologies that keep us coming up on ballots and as the issue that divides America. Visit the Freedom to Marry website to sign up to volunteer.
